Information and Referral
If you have a question about mental illness or
need referral to services, call, fax, write or visit the
Resource Centre.
Frequently requested services are listed in our
Quick Guide to Mental Health Services. For referrals we
rely on the Peel Community Information database at
peel.cioc.ca.
It’s a web-based listing of health, government, and social
services in Peel Region. Whether you just need a phone number, or
are unsure of the issue and don’t know where to begin, we can
help. We’ll spend some time with you on the phone, make calls on
your behalf, and get you started with the right sources of
support.
We subscribe to the professional standards of
information & referral services as set out by InformCanada (www.informcanada.ca)
and the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (www.airs.org).

Library
If you want to know more about an illness or
issue, visit our library. Whether you’re a student needing to
research for a project, or a family member trying to understand
what a loved one is feeling, you’ll find hundreds of books,
videos, pamphlets and booklets. Titles like “The Last Taboo,” “Who
Moved My Cheese” and “Thin is Just a Four-Letter Word” make
intriguing reading. Pamphlets about Schizophrenia, Anxiety
Disorder, Teen Suicide, Divorce and Stress make complex issues
understandable. We have a CD ROM that lists almost every available
medication, telling you what it is, the conditions for which it’s
commonly prescribed and potential side effects.
If you’re diagnosed with S.A.D. (Seasonal
Affective Disorder) and your doctor recommends light therapy, you
can borrow a SADelite to try at home. Call ahead to reserve it at
905-451-2123.
The privilege of borrowing from the library is
limited to paid members of the Association, but the cost is
nominal. All are welcome to stay and review materials on site.

Displays
Perhaps you're a student, teacher, employer or
faith leader with an interest in mental health. Why not consider a
display at your school/place of business/worship? We need three
weeks notice but can come to your location. We bring an attractive
display board, pamphlets from our national series on mental
illness, and information about our programs. A staff member, who
is likely to be an information and referral specialist, can be
there anywhere between two and six hours.
Contact us or call
905-451-2123 for more information.

Education
We offer several presentations, training and
workshops to educate people about mental health and illness.
Audiences range in size from 10-200. We've gone to schools,
workplaces, agencies and government offices. Using lecture
supported by overheads or projection slides, we strive to heighten
awareness, correct misinformation, and increase your comfort level
on a topic. Handouts are provided, if requested; otherwise, a
master package is left behind. Fees apply and you'll need three
weeks notice to book training sessions. Click on Education &
Training for more information.
