Chances are that the Canadian Mental Health Association is older
than you. One of the oldest voluntary organizations in the
country, it was founded in 1918 by Dr. C. K. Clarke and Dr. C.
M. Hincks. They recognized the need for a society or
organization whose focus was to ensure that patients discharged
from mental hospitals received adequate "after-care." Back then
it had a different name: the Canadian National Committee for
